- Google previously announced that it would bring Gemini to Gmail for use by Google One AI Premium subscribers.
- Now, Google appears to be experimenting with artificial intelligence-generated Gemini replies in its Gmail app for Android.
- Users can click on the reply to edit and send it, or let Google know if the reply is bad. Currently, the feature is hidden behind some developer flags.
After trying to integrate Gemini in Google Workspace, Google appears to be testing AI-generated replies in the Gmail app for Android. Earlier this year, Google announced that it would make AI-based features available to Google One AI Premium beta subscribers. A new implementation of Gemini in the Gmail app has surfaced, providing Gemini’s three reply suggestions for each of your emails.
Android coding expert AssembleDebug was able to enable the feature in the Gmail app and shared the results with PiunikaWeb. Google calls the tool “Reply Suggestions from Gemini,” and the feature works after flipping some developer flags in Gmail. When enabled, Gemini can analyze the content of emails received by Gmail users and suggest three responses that make sense in context. In some cases, AI-generated Gemini responses can be as long as one or two full sentences.

You can execute a suggestion by clicking on one of the AI-generated options, which will move its content to the compose field. Afterwards, you can press the send button to complete your reply. However, you may want to edit the message or add more content, perhaps after Gemini’s suggested replies are moved to the compose field.
Gemini is already present in Gmail, but in a different way. Google One AI Premium subscribers can get help creating emails using Gemini, although this feature is still in beta. Help me write in Workspace Labs is another way for users to use AI to write emails in Gmail. Compared to these two options, Gemini Reply Suggestions has a completely different purpose. These suggestions are designed to provide quick, pre-written responses that can be sent with just two taps in the Gmail app for Android.
Like many implementations of Gemini, Google wants your feedback when using its AI tools. In some cases, Google will display the “Bad Suggestion?” action item below Gemini’s suggested reply. Clicking on the text will give you the opportunity to notify Google when an AI-generated reply in Gmail falls short.
While Gemini’s suggested replies are now available after manually enabling the developer flag, we don’t know when they will be released publicly.
